Maumee Duplex Top Marking.JPG - MAUMEE DUPLEX - Very hard to find brass lamp, marked DUPLEX on one tank and MAUMEE MFG. CO., PITTSBURGH, PA on the other tank, each bottom marked PATENTED MAY 12-14, early design to use double tanks forbackup when refueling [design patent #45,758 by F. W. Law May 12,1914]; acquired from seller in Iowa who says the lamp belonged to woman in 60s who's grandfather was coal miner in Melcher-Dallas, IA area in 1910’s and 20’s, found in attic] (The Maumee Duplex is one of the strangest and most coveted carbide lamps by collectors. Manufactured by the Maumee Manufacturing Co. in Pittsburgh, PA, they were only produced during 1914 and 1915 and probably saw very little use in the mines. Possessing two independent carbide containers, two separate water control levers served by a common water tank, and two separate burner tips, the lamp was designed to provide a backup light if one of the carbide containers was used up. The Frank Law patent of 1914 covered the design but patents by Lohmann-Hold Manufacturing Co. (#1,078,865 of Nov. 18, 1913) and by Bruce B. Stone (#1,091,982 of March 31, 1914) reveal details and features captured in the Maumee Duplex. In business for only two years, the company ceased operations in 1915. See Clemmer, American Miner's Carbide Lamps, p 82)
